Prism release 5th March 2014

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please get in touch. You can comment here on the blog, on the Prism forum and Prism Ideas or contact your Account Manager or the Prism team directly.

Prism Release Preview 7th February 2014

We’re pleased to announce that the next release of Prism is now available for preview, with associated features in a new release of the Admin Console.

This release includes:

  • Autocomplete search suggestions
  • Date range widget for Published Year facet
  • Reviews
  • Indicate reserved loans
  • Web pages in search results
  • Upload images for items without standard numbers
  • Improvements to Spelling Suggestions (Did you mean …)
  • Other inclusions

Autocomplete

As you enter text into the search box, Prism provides a list of suggested searches based on the information that is being entered.  This reduces the amount of typing required and will return results more quickly. Prism suggests titles,  Autocompleteauthors, subjects, nature of contents and genres, with the data coming directly from your catalogue content. On selecting a suggestion the search is submitted.

The autocomplete option is available to view in your sandbox tenancy at demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk/{your catalogue name}-sandbox.  On go live we will enable this feature across the customer base over a period of one month.  If you would like to be one of the first customers to have this feature enabled in your catalogue please open a support case.

Date range widget for Published Year facet

The Year Published facet now gives a visual representation of the spread of  Published year sliderpublication dates in your results together with a slider tool allowing you to easily select a date range. In the mobile interface this is replaced by drop-down lists of ‘From’ and ‘To’ years.

Reviews

Users can now review items in the catalogue, which can be moderated by library staff. This feature is turned off by default, but can be easily enabled in the Admin Console.  Under the Community Features section there is an ‘Enable reviews’ check box. Your existing moderation settings will apply to reviews.

There is  a new User Content Moderation (Reviews) section in the Admin Console, following the same pattern as the moderation sections for Lists and Tags.

The Community Contributions panel in the Item Detail page lists up to three recent reviews, together with a link to browse all reviews available.  In this area, you can add or edit your own review and set or amend your individual rating (if ratings are enabled in the catalogue). You also have the ability to log in to report a review as inappropriate.

System text is configurable.

Indicate reserved loans

In the list of loans, within the My Account area, Prism now displays an indicator when the item is reserved by another user. Should a user click on thIndicate reserved loansis indicator, an information message is displayed.

The text of this message is configurable.

Web pages in search results

You are now able to add your own URL content to Prism, and have these pages Web page results highlighted to a borrower when searching for matching keywords. This could be used to enable users to find the Library Opening Hours page or the Library Charges page by searching in Prism.

The Admin Console has a new section, ‘Pages’, allowing you to specify page URLs and associate query terms with them. You can also give them a title and description: the title provides the link text in the search result, and the description displays below it. During the preview period this feature will be enabled within your Prism sandbox. Once Prism has been released to the live service you will be able to enable this feature in your Prism catalogue through the Admin Console.

Upload images for items without standard numbers

A new section in the Admin Console allows you to upload images to display in Prism. This is for items that don’t currently have an image and where the record does not have any standard identifiers such as ISBN, ISSN or EAN. This will be useful for older material and for equipment such as cameras and laptops.

To upload an image you need to specify the item unique identifier, then browse and select the image from your computer file system. Prism automatically re-sizes the image to each of the three widths used in Prism, preserving the aspect ratio. Please bear in mind that image file size will affect upload time. It is advisable to ensure your image height is between 1 and 2 times the width for an effective display in Prism. Please ensure that you have the right to use any image that you upload.

Improvements to Spelling Suggestions (Did you mean …)

In response to feedback the recent spelling suggestions feature has been refined to give better suggestions and eliminate the less useful ones.

Other inclusions

  • Display Current Frequency. This displays some helpful extra data in the item detail page for serials, with the default label ‘Current frequency’. The information comes from field 310 in the MARC record.
  • Paging on tag pages. Paging is now included on results for a tag, so that all items with that tag can now be viewed.
  • Error when signed in user submits feedback – fixed. A user who has signed in to Prism can submit feedback without getting an error.

Prism Release Preview 18th December 2013

We’re pleased to announce that the latest release of Prism is available for you to preview.

This release includes:

  • “Did you mean” spelling correction
  • Single Sign On using Athens and Shibboleth authentication methods
  • EBSCO discovery integration improvements
  • Integrated Inter-library loan request improvements
  • Analysis terms in the Online Joining form.

Spelling Suggestions

Bringing intelligent suggestions for failed searches has been a feature we’ve been planning since the move to our new Capita infrastructure. In this release, Prism gives spelling suggestions with search results based on terms in your catalogue. When it determines that an alternative query might improve the search results you’ll see a message at the top of the results. The message can vary according to the outcome of your original search: DYM

  • ‘Did you mean:’ This occurs when there are results for your original search but results are also available for the correct spelling. For example, if you search for geneology you may see ‘Did you mean: Genealogy’. You can click on the suggested term to search for it.
  • Showing results for:’ This occurs when your original search doesn’t find anything but it seems likely you meant a slightly different spelling. For example, if you search for airodynamics you may see ‘Sorry, didn’t find anything for airodynamics. Showing results for Aerodynamics’.
  • Showing results for: … Did you mean …:’ In this case, as well as showing you results for a slightly different spelling, Prism also offers another alternative. For example, if you search for kittenz you may see ‘Sorry, didn’t find anything for kittenz. Showing results for Kittens. Did you mean: Kitten?’.

The spelling suggestions feature is switched on by default. If you would like it to be switched off in any of your tenancies (e.g. main, sandbox) please open a Support case. We are planning to allow you to do this yourself with a setting in the Admin Console.

Single Sign On using Athens and Shibboleth authentication methods

Many academic institutions use Shibboleth or Athens authentication for single sign on (SSO) to a range of services. As a library in such an institution, you can now enable your users to sign in to Prism using the institutional authentication service.

In addition to not needing specific Prism credentials, your users also benefit from only having to sign in once to either Prism or one of the other SSO services such as the student portal, and then be able to access any of the other SSO-enabled services including Prism without further challenge.

A user in Prism who has authenticated via SSO will be able to access their Contact options and Communications if you have enabled these in the Admin Console even when you haven’t enabled PINs. If the user signs in with their borrower barcode and a PIN is not required then they will not have access to those features.

When you have SSO enabled, the My Account link in Prism by default takes the user directly to the institutional sign in page. Optionally it can go to your Prism Sign In page, which we can amend to include a link giving the user the option to sign in with Single Sign On SSO or BarcodePIN Log Inusing their institutional username and password. You may wish to do this to allow visitors who have been granted temporary access to sign in to Prism.

For more information about Single Sign On integration please contact your Account Manager or email libraries-sales@capita.co.uk.

EBSCO discovery integration improvements

We’ve made a number of improvements to the integration that allows users to seArticle search resultsarch EBSCO discovery services data from within Prism. Search is now more closely integrated with the EBSCO API for more effective retrieval of results, including the use of qualifiers familiar in Prism such as ‘issn:’ and ‘isbn:’. EBSCO is also searched automatically before a user can submit a request via Prism’s integrated inter-library loan request form.

Article Item DetailIn the display of results and item details, where metadata from EBSCO is suppressed due to access restrictions, users can sign in to Prism as part of the workflow in order to see full details. Item detail pages now have extensive information including full citation information, abstracts and links to the full text.

Integrated Inter-library loan request improvements

We’ve improved the processing of the integrated Inter-library loan request form (ILL search resultsa Prism Pro feature) so that it searches any augmented discovery data sources that you have integrated in Prism, such as EBSCO, before the request is submitted. It reports on items found in both the local catalogue and other integrated sources and allows the user to check their availability, access full text online, view and browse similar results or proceed with submission of the ILL request.

We’ve also improved the mapping of data from the form into corresponding data elements in Alto, for more effective checking by the library and by potential supplying agencies.

Analysis terms in the Online Joining form

With this release we can enable you to add fields to the Online Joining form (a Prism Pro feature) using your Analysis terms, which you may wish to use to capture data such as applicants’ nationality and ethnicity. This requires that we carry out some implementation work to set up the data for your form. For more information or to request this, please raise a Support case.

New version of Prism Design Guidelines available

A updated version of the Prism Design Guidelines (version 4) is now available from the Prism website.

This includes a new section on Take the Tour, giving details about configuring and adapting it.

Prism Domain Name Migration – Updating Links

As part of the migration away from prism.talis.com all links contained within the Prism theme or on external websites linking through to Prism tenancies need to be updated to point to capitadiscovery.co.uk.

We have recently identified that there are several different places where the prism.talis.com address continues to be used:

  • Juice extensions
  • External web sites such as council or University homepages
  • Prism 3 themes in headerlinks or prepared searches
  • Monitoring tools

If links are being amended from within the Prism theme then they should use relative URLs – this allows the theme to be copied between the live and sandbox tenancies without the need to update any of the links.  Shown below are examples of both absolute and relative URLs.

Absolute URL (please refrain from using)
<a href=”http://capitadiscovery.co.uk/birmingham/items/158168?query=hobbit&resultsUri=items%3Fquery%3Dhobbit”><img src=”http://capitadiscovery.co.uk/birmingham/items/158168/image-small” alt=”” /></a>

Relative URL
<a href=”items/158168?query=hobbit&resultsUri=items%3Fquery%3Dhobbit”><img src=”items/158168/image-small” alt=”” /></a>
