Prism Release Preview, 8th December 2014

We’re pleased to announce that the next release of Prism is now available for preview.
This release includes:

  • Reservation charge warning and confirmation
  • Schema.org microdata in Prism pages
  • Gender field change in the Prism Pro Joining form

Reservation charge warning and confirmation

The Reserve button on the item detail page now shows the charge for placing a reservation, where applicable. This is derived from the same rules as when the Reservation charge on buttonreservation is actually placed. When you’re not signed in the charge is displayed only if the library applies the same charge in all circumstances. If you click the button and sign in then the page is re-displayed as now, but with the charge displayed on the button as appropriate.
Reservation confirm
When signed in, clicking the button when there is a charge takes you to a new page where you are reminded of the charge and your chosen collection site and invited to either confirm or cancel. ‘Cancel’ takes you back to the item detail page without placing the reservation. ‘Confirm’ places the reservation and gives you a confirmed page with details of your reservation and a button to return to the item page. When there is no charge, clicking the Reserve button places the reservation directly and gives you the confirmed page.Reservation placed success

The various labels on the Reserve button in the different conditions are new texts in Prism. Old bespoke texts will no longer display, such as ‘Reserve this item (charges may apply)’. Bespoke variants of the new texts can be added as required: please open a Support case, as for any other Prism text change.

Schema.org microdata in Prism pages

Pages in Prism now include schema.org microdata embedded in the html. This has no direct effect on the use and appearance of Prism, but it integrates your content more meaningfully into the wider web for the benefit of users and libraries.

Microdata provides a structure and vocabulary to describe types of information, making the contents of web pages more meaningful to computers. This could include information about books and other library resources, people, services, and so on. It is understood by the major search engines and allows them to  provide more relevant results to users both in terms of ranking in response to queries and the information displayed. It is also used by web-based social media. The purpose for libraries is to increase the visibility of their resources and services on the web, and thus increase the use and perceived value of libraries.

Here are links to more information about structured data and schema.org.

Gender field change in the Prism Pro Joining form

The Gender field on the Prism Pro Joining form was not populating the LMS database. It has been removed. Instead, a Gender field can be added to the form as part of the implementation, using the library’s Analysis code data for gender if created and required by the library.

Making the most of your preview

Please check the preview version as early as possible to familiarise with the new reservation functionality and to ensure that your tenancy still behaves as expected in terms of both functionality, including extensions, and styling.

To preview this release, please precede your tenancy URL with ‘demo.’, like this: demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk/{your tenancy name}. If you have your own host name, you’ll need to use demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk instead.

We are aware of impacts on styling with this release, mainly concerning the Check Availability,  Reserve and Save buttons in the Results and Item Detail pages. If you are an Assist Managed customer or if you commissioned your Prism theme from us then we will fix any styling issues arising from this release before it goes live, and contact you individually to let you know when it has been done. Otherwise, here are some guidelines to help you fix any such issues.

Please refer to the Prism Design Guidelines (PDF)  for more extensive guidance on best practices.

To fix issues with the buttons it is advisable to defer to the base Prism styling as much as possible as we’ve ensured a set of defaults that should render well on all browsers, including mobile devices, and provide ample area to click.

Otherwise, removing fixed widths on buttons, as well as custom padding, and any fixed-width images will be a required first step – this ensures that button text can be changed and not break rendering. Most background images that we’ve seen used in Prism themes can be successfully implemented with pure CSS.

If you’ve hidden buttons on the search results page (e.g. to stop the “Save” button appearing) you’ll need to use the more specific CSS selector, which should fix 99% of issues:

#searchaction ul.itemActions li.listAction { display: none; }

Release to the live service

The release of Prism to the live service will be on Monday 5th January 2015.

If you need to resolve any styling issues we  strongly recommend that you endeavour to do that before Christmas.

Prism eBooks Integration with OverDrive

In a recent enhancement to the user experience in Prism we’ve provided integration with OverDrive eBooks (including eAudio) so that users can see the availability and formats of Prism eBooks integrationitems, download or reserve them, and see their downloads account, directly within Prism. Until now, users have had to follow a link to a separate OverDrive catalogue to manage their e-loans, where they can sign in using their library card number and PIN if you have a Connect for OverDrive licence.

Not only does this help drive up usage of your ebook collection by making it easier to use and  increasing awareness of it, but also it gives users a more holistic view of their interactions with the library, with ebook Prism eBooks integration accounttransactions incuded in My Account.

You can see see from the image that users can also go back to their ebook loan at any time and download it as many times as they wish for the period of the loan.

Prism eBooks integration Return from Adobe DE If the user wishes to “return” the item in the OverDrive library before it expires, this will update their My Account area of Prism in real time too.

One of the next steps for development that we’re investigating is the possibility of reporting via Decisions on ebook usage.

We’re also adding integration with more ebooks providers – we’re working on integrating Askews and Holts eBooks and eAudio. We are keen to include as many suppliers as we can, so please do get in touch with suggestions for those you’d like to see next.

If you were unable to attend either of the recent webinars on Prism eBooks Integration or would like to review what we covered then you can catch up by watching the recording of the webinar below or by downloading the video.

Prism Release Preview 7th February 2014

We’re pleased to announce that the next release of Prism is now available for preview, with associated features in a new release of the Admin Console.

This release includes:

  • Autocomplete search suggestions
  • Date range widget for Published Year facet
  • Reviews
  • Indicate reserved loans
  • Web pages in search results
  • Upload images for items without standard numbers
  • Improvements to Spelling Suggestions (Did you mean …)
  • Other inclusions

Autocomplete

As you enter text into the search box, Prism provides a list of suggested searches based on the information that is being entered.  This reduces the amount of typing required and will return results more quickly. Prism suggests titles,  Autocompleteauthors, subjects, nature of contents and genres, with the data coming directly from your catalogue content. On selecting a suggestion the search is submitted.

The autocomplete option is available to view in your sandbox tenancy at demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk/{your catalogue name}-sandbox.  On go live we will enable this feature across the customer base over a period of one month.  If you would like to be one of the first customers to have this feature enabled in your catalogue please open a support case.

Date range widget for Published Year facet

The Year Published facet now gives a visual representation of the spread of  Published year sliderpublication dates in your results together with a slider tool allowing you to easily select a date range. In the mobile interface this is replaced by drop-down lists of ‘From’ and ‘To’ years.

Reviews

Users can now review items in the catalogue, which can be moderated by library staff. This feature is turned off by default, but can be easily enabled in the Admin Console.  Under the Community Features section there is an ‘Enable reviews’ check box. Your existing moderation settings will apply to reviews.

There is  a new User Content Moderation (Reviews) section in the Admin Console, following the same pattern as the moderation sections for Lists and Tags.

The Community Contributions panel in the Item Detail page lists up to three recent reviews, together with a link to browse all reviews available.  In this area, you can add or edit your own review and set or amend your individual rating (if ratings are enabled in the catalogue). You also have the ability to log in to report a review as inappropriate.

System text is configurable.

Indicate reserved loans

In the list of loans, within the My Account area, Prism now displays an indicator when the item is reserved by another user. Should a user click on thIndicate reserved loansis indicator, an information message is displayed.

The text of this message is configurable.

Web pages in search results

You are now able to add your own URL content to Prism, and have these pages Web page results highlighted to a borrower when searching for matching keywords. This could be used to enable users to find the Library Opening Hours page or the Library Charges page by searching in Prism.

The Admin Console has a new section, ‘Pages’, allowing you to specify page URLs and associate query terms with them. You can also give them a title and description: the title provides the link text in the search result, and the description displays below it. During the preview period this feature will be enabled within your Prism sandbox. Once Prism has been released to the live service you will be able to enable this feature in your Prism catalogue through the Admin Console.

Upload images for items without standard numbers

A new section in the Admin Console allows you to upload images to display in Prism. This is for items that don’t currently have an image and where the record does not have any standard identifiers such as ISBN, ISSN or EAN. This will be useful for older material and for equipment such as cameras and laptops.

To upload an image you need to specify the item unique identifier, then browse and select the image from your computer file system. Prism automatically re-sizes the image to each of the three widths used in Prism, preserving the aspect ratio. Please bear in mind that image file size will affect upload time. It is advisable to ensure your image height is between 1 and 2 times the width for an effective display in Prism. Please ensure that you have the right to use any image that you upload.

Improvements to Spelling Suggestions (Did you mean …)

In response to feedback the recent spelling suggestions feature has been refined to give better suggestions and eliminate the less useful ones.

Other inclusions

  • Display Current Frequency. This displays some helpful extra data in the item detail page for serials, with the default label ‘Current frequency’. The information comes from field 310 in the MARC record.
  • Paging on tag pages. Paging is now included on results for a tag, so that all items with that tag can now be viewed.
  • Error when signed in user submits feedback – fixed. A user who has signed in to Prism can submit feedback without getting an error.

Prism Release Preview 11th September 2013

We’re pleased to announce that the latest release of Prism is available for you to preview. This release includes a new search builder to replace advanced search, user contributed tags,  borrower notification preferences, and several other features.

Search builder replacing advanced search
Prism-Build-SearchAdvanced search is little used in Prism or in other systems. This new feature offers a more integrated and engaging approach. The ‘More search options’ link is replaced by ‘Build Search’, giving the user a simple dialogue in the same place as the search box. Brief guidance text appears as the user selects options.

The user sees the query being built in the search box, allowing them to learn and be able to use  expert query techniques in future.

Tags
Prism-TagsThe Community Contributions panel on the Item Detail page, which details lists that the item is on, now also includes tags contributed by users within your library service. You can click on a tag to retrieve items with that tag. A link allows the user to log in to add tags or change their existing tags for the item.

On the Community Features page of the recently released update to the Admin Console there is an ‘Enable tags’ option allowing you to configure this feature on or off (the default is off), and a new moderation area allows you to moderate users’ tags in the same way as you can moderate lists. Your existing moderation settings apply to both lists and tags.

Borrower notifications
A new tab, ‘Contact options’, in the My Account area allows the user to view and amend the methods of communication that they are happy for the library to use to send them notifications and whether they consent to receiving updates on library news and events. The options they can see are dependent on options being enabled in new configuration settings in SetConfig in Alto 5.5. For security, the new tab will only display if you require users to enter a PIN to log in.

This feature will become available when you have completed the full upgrade to Alto 5.5.  This release of Alto is currently in beta test and is expected to go on general release this month.

Relator terms and Series number handling
Relator terms as additions to names are now common in RDA cataloguing. In this release Prism excludes the relator term from author facets and from Find more by Author. This means that, in those places, two occurrences of a name, with and without a relator term in the MARC record, are treated as the same name in a single entry.

In Find more by Series the series already displays correctly without the volume number of the item within the series, and it retrieves all items in that series. In this release the volume number is reinstated for display in descriptive areas and for indexing to allow search for an item by series including the volume number.

You’ll see these changes as you process updates after the release has gone live.

Domain migration re-direct
In connection with the Prism domain Name Transition from the old domain name prism.talis.com to the new domain name capitadiscovery.co.uk this release gives us the ability to activate the ‘noisy’ re-direct that briefly displays a message advising the user to update their bookmarks before it continues to the new domain.

Login form validation
When the user tries to log in without completing the login form, rather than telling them that their credentials were not recognised it displays an appropriate prompt alerting the user to the fields they need to complete.

Restrict features to specific IP addresses
This feature provides the IP address of the user in a way that allows you to use it in JavaScript to provide functionality for specific locations such as OPACs in the library. For example, you could make the account timeout apply only to library OPACs.

Contents notes display fix
This fixes an issue where contents notes were not displaying when each element of the contents was in a separate MARC field. These now display correctly.

You’ll see this change as you process updates after the release has gone live.

ILL workflow
This Prism Pro feature provides integrated inter-library loan requesting, including searching various sources for bibliographic details and automatically creating a pending ILL request in the LMS for staff to check and authorise. Initially it is being enabled for a development partner. For more details please ask your Account Manager or email libraries-sales@capita.co.uk.

Lists fixes
This release fixes issues with  list contents sometimes not displaying, related to the old and new Prism domains.

Other features

  • The links to items in moderation emails now use the new domain
  • My Account pages always use https

Making the most of your preview
This release is now available for you to preview. Please do make the most of this opportunity to gain familiarity with the new features and ensure that your tenancy still behaves as expected.

As the release includes CSS and JavaScript changes for Build Search, your Prism styling may have been impacted. If you identify any issues with your styling please raise a Support case.

As with every release, please also ensure that your extensions continue to work correctly.

To preview this release, please precede your tenancy URL at the new domain name with ‘demo.’, like this: demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk/{your tenancy name}. If you have your own host name, you’ll need to use demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk instead.

Admin Console Release 4th September 2013

We’re pleased to announce that a new release of the Admin Console is now live. This release enables the beta of Alto Borrower Notifications (Alto 5.5) and the admin aspects of the forthcoming tags feature that is in the next release of Prism.

Admin Overview menuWhen you sign in to the Admin Console and select one of your Prism tenancies you will see a change in the contents menu: the ‘User Content Moderation’ link has become two links, one to the existing Moderation area for Lists, and the other to a new Moderation area for Tags.

Admin Community Features Tags enableIn the Community Features area there is a new check box ‘Enable tags’, which is unchecked by default. Checking this box will allow users to add, change and browse tags when the forthcoming version of Prism is released (you will be able to try it in the preview).

Admin Moderation TagsThe Moderation area for Tags works in the same way as the one for Lists. There is an ‘Awaiting Moderation’ queue where tags are held for your approval when you have the Moderation Level set to ‘Pre-moderated’; an ‘Already Blocked’ list for tags you have blocked; and the Live list of approved tags (with the Post-Moderation level set, tags go straight to Live).

The next release of Prism with the Tags feature (and other features) is due to be released to preview next week – we’ll announce it here as usual.

If you have any comments, questions or suggestions on the Admin Console please get in touch. You can comment here on the Prism blog, on the Prism forum and Prism Ideas or contact your Account Manager or the Prism team directly.

Prism EDS Integration

EDS Integration

We have recently released a new feature in Prism for libraries that use EBSCO data via EDS (EBSCO Discovery Service). The integration allows your users to search the EDS data from within the Prism search interface, by allowing users to select the resource they’d like to search:

Index selection dropdown

Your users can then easily navigate around a whole host of resources from one place. For those of you who have been using the Connect for EBSCO licence for a while (which allows Prism data to be surfaced in EDS), all you need do is contact us to take advantage of this additional integration, as there is no additional charge. Please raise a support call to ask us to enable this: libraries-support@capita.co.uk

Search of library catalogue

A search of the library catalogue

Discovery service results

The same query searching EDS

This type of integration will be the same for CALM and any other external data sets you would like us to integrate with.

If you don’t already have the Connect for EBSCO licence, please contact libraries-sales@capita.co.uk.

Prism Release Preview 4th July 2013

I’m pleased to announce that the latest release of Prism is available for you to preview. This release includes Augmented Discovery – EBSCO, and search by Unique Identifier.

Augmented Discovery – EBSCO

If you subscribe to electronic resources via EBSCO, we can configure Prism so that your users can choose to search your resources as indexed in the EBSCO Discovery Service, or to search your local catalogue as now. If you would wish to have this enabled or if you have any questions regarding this, please contact your Account Manager or email, libraries-sales@capita.co.uk.

Search by Unique Identifier

For exact access to a particular item a new search qualifier ‘uid:’ will allow you to search with the unique identifier of an item using a query like ‘uid:123456’. This will make it easier for library staff to look up a known item (currently you can start with another item and change the identifier in the URI). This feature also serves library staff using Soprano, since item search in Soprano uses the Prism search system.

To preview this release

To preview this release, please precede your tenancy URL at the new domain name with ‘demo.’, so: demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk/{your tenancy name}. If you have your own host name, you’ll need to use demo.capitadiscovery.co.uk instead.

Release to the live service

This version of Prism will be released to the live service on Tuesday 9th July 2013. It is a short period in preview because for most libraries the impact of change is minimal (the addition of search by unique identifier), and because augmented discovery – EBSCO has been reviewed already by the initial implementers. It also allows us to move on more quickly towards release of a number of further developments.
